Noise is happening continuously throughout the 24 hour time period and usually contains both continuous and impulsive noise. As it sounds, continuous noise is happening at a given level for set periods of time and can sometimes be likened to a droning sound. In contrast, impulsive noise happens over a shorter duration of time for example, a gun shot.

The effect of noise during both daytime and night-time periods can range from noise nuisance leading to noise complaints or even side effects such as elevated stress or sleep deprivation etc, showing that noise should be monitored and controlled.

If there is a specific noise present at a given location, we can monitor/survey the noise, analyse the type of sound and aim to give noise mitigation advice.

On a larger scale, from a business wanting to implement a new piece of equipment or relocate premises, to road developments leading to increased traffic flow etc, we can predict what the theoretical noise impact on the surrounding area will be. By performing a survey in-situe or using data provided by manufacturers or traffic consultants etc, it is possible to calculate what the noise impact will be at a given distance from a noise source. This process of measuring and calculating noise can sometimes be referred to as noise mapping.

Often when we refer to a noise assessment it involves not only the measurement or prediction of the noise itself, but also an assessment of this noise against the existing background noise level referred to as the LA90, in order to assess the likelihood of complaints. An example of this could be the introduction of a wind turbine near noise sensitive receptors where the noise produced from the turbine must result in a level of say -10 dB below the existing background LA90 level. Therefore using this example, if the existing background noise level at noise sensitive receptors was measured at say 50 dB LA90, then noise from the wind turbine should be controlled to be no more than 40 dB(A) at the noise sensitive receptors in order to comply.
