Regarding occupational noise itself, the 'Health And Safety Executive (HSE) Noise At Work regulations 2005' must currently be followed by employers to ensure that employees are protected from excessive noise levels which may lead to noise induced hearing loss or other health issues.

Health And Safety Noise At Work Assessments

Our noise assessments are designed for employers that want, or need to check the noise exposure of employees whilst at work.

It is the employers responsibility to determine risks to the employees whilst at work.

The noise at work regulations themselves give limits regarding noise which is expressed as the ‘Lower Noise Exposure’ and ‘Upper Noise Exposure’ action value levels. In addition, there are also other noise limits such as ‘Peak’ or ‘Maximum’ sound pressure values which should be monitored. It should be remembered that an employee’s noise exposure calculation should be based on an average of the typical working day, or even week if required.

When employees noise exposure becomes above the lower action value level, but below the upper action value level, hearing protection must be provided to any employee if requested, whilst if the employee’s noise exposure is above the upper action value level, hearing protection is considered mandatory, and should be enforced by management.

As a company, you may think that as perhaps your tool provider has given you a noise level of the tool which is below 80 dB(A), that your employees are protected from noise? It must be remembered that more often than not, manufacturer noise levels are based on a laboratory test result i.e. not a real life situation, with tool load applied. For example, an angle grinder could be laboratory tested on free run with a solid metal disc, not cutting anything, when we would contest that it should be tested with a grinding wheel fitted, whilst grinding a material it is intended to be used with, as otherwise, the noise levels will appear acceptable when in reality, they could be dangerous.

An increasing number of people are making successful claims for noise induced hearing loss related injuries based on current or previous employment. Therefore, failure to check compliance with the noise at work regulations, could result in legal implications.
